September and October 2015

I was troubled to hear the breathless news broadcasts of the Pope's visit to our Country. Don't get me wrong, I am sure the Pope is a nice guy. I am sure he is very sincere in his beliefs. I am sure he is quite intelligent. And, I am sure he means well for not only the denomination he leads but for humanity in general. But....he is still a man. We who recognize our frailty seem to long for someone or something that is bigger than life, something to pin our hopes on. There is such a one. That One is our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the One who has paid the price to save us by dying on the cross and rising again. He is the One who walked among us as "God with us". He is the One who will bring us to Himself as His own for eternity. To have our hopes rest in anything or anyone else is foolishness and the sin of idolatry. No man, political leader or institution, no religion or spiritual entity or experience offers mankind any hope at all. Only Jesus Christ saves us. I would suggest that we respect great men and institutions, but do not ever make them more than they are. Such misplaced hopes will only be dashed.
